Finland investigates gas leak on undersea gas pipeline to Estonia, authorities believe it is sabotage

A gas leak on the pipeline between Finland and Estonia discovered on Sunday may have been caused by malicious acts. An investigation into the incident is underway, based on the assumption that it was a deliberate sabotage.

Source. Bloomberg writes about this with reference to sources familiar with the situation.

According to one of them, the leak is located in Finnish waters. An "unusual" drop in pressure was recorded on Sunday by the Finnish operator Gasgrid Finland and the Estonian Elering, gas pumping was suspended, and the countries began an inspection.

The Finnish government reported on Tuesday that the damaged dyalnka had been found, and a defect in the communication cable to Estonia had been discovered.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said the problems with the pipeline and cable were likely the result of "external influence" and that he had consulted with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

The Balticconnector gas pipeline has been in operation since 2020, running between the Estonian city of Paldiska and the Finnish city of Inkoo, with a total length of 151 km and a 77 km underwater section. The maximum pumping volume is 2.6 billion cubic meters per year. Gas is delivered in both directions.
