Biden: "We will make sure Israel can defend itself"
He warned those who "want to take advantage of this situation"

U.S. President Joe Biden has spoken out in response to Hamas' attack on Israel, which he called "an act of pure evil."
"Let no one be in any doubt. The United States supports Israel. We will make sure that the Jewish and democratic state of Israel can defend itself today, tomorrow, as we have always done," Biden said.
"To anybody who is thinking of taking advantage of this situation, I will say one thing: don't do it," he emphasized.
"Hamas is not defending the Palestinian people," Biden said, "They are using the Palestinian people as human shields.
The US President cited examples of violence committed by Hamas militants as a result of the attack:
"Parents who were protecting their children with their bodies were killed... Reports of babies being killed... Women were raped and paraded around like trophies."
"We support Israel. We stand with Israel," Biden emphasized, adding that Israel will have what it takes to respond to the attack.
He also reminded that there are Americans among the hostages taken by Hamas, and 14 US citizens were killed in the terrorist attack on Israel.
The total number of victims of the attack on Israel by militants of the radical Hamas group has exceeded 1000, the Israeli Embassy in the United States reported on Monday. About 3500 people were wounded. Between 100 and 150 Israelis and citizens of other countries, including the United States, were captured. They are currently being held in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 800 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of massive air strikes by the Israeli army. More than 4,000 people were injured.
