EU launches investigation into TikTok and Meta for spreading Hamas terrorist propaganda

The European Union has launched an investigation into the activities of TikTok and Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, in connection with a possible violation of the Digital Services Act (DSA) in the area of content moderation. It is about the dissemination of materials about the Hamas war against Israel.

Source. This was reported by Politico.

The European Commission has sent official requests to corporations. By October 25, they must provide data on measures to counter the spread of illegal content and disinformation on platforms. Earlier, a similar request was received by Twitter.

It was instructed to report on the measures taken in response to the crisis in the Middle East by October 18.

The European Commission's request is a preliminary stage that may be followed by a formal investigation. Companies can be fined up to 6% of their annual global revenue if it turns out that they have violated the DSA.

European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton had earlier warned Meta and TikTok CEOs Mark Zuckerberg and Shou Ji Chu about the need to increase efforts to prevent disinformation, terrorist propaganda and other illegal publications.

Meta representative Ben Walters noted that after the Hamas attack, the company created a special operations center. It employs specialists who speak Hebrew and Arabic. They work to moderate content that violates Meta's rules or local laws, and also cooperate with third-party fact-checkers.

Background. Bloomberg reported that Hamas' attack on Israel was a test for Musk's X, and it failed.
