"Mr. Jordan insisted on voting despite clear signs that he would not be able to win, and the result showed that he actually lost ground: 25 Republicans opposed him, compared with 22 who voted against him in his last attempt on Wednesday. He needed 215 votes to win, but received 194," the report said.
The NYT notes that as a result of Jordan's defeat, his party was unable to come to a consensus on how to proceed. At the same time, the US House of Representatives has been paralyzed in the face of growing pressure to return to work.
Further actions of the House remain unclear.
The House of Representatives has already voted twice on Jordan's nomination, but to no avail.
In early October, the House of Representatives voted to dismiss Republican Kevin McCarthy as Speaker. This provoked controversy among Republican congressmen. Republican Patrick McHenry was appointed interim speaker.
It is emphasized that until the House of Representatives elects a speaker, it cannot negotiate the budget and pass laws.
Background. As a reminder, Biden is asking Congress to allocate $60 billion to support Ukraine, with another $14 billion to be used to help Israel. This bill cannot be voted on until the House of Representatives elects a speaker.
