The value of Russian assets seized in Ukraine exceeded $5.4 billion

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has seized assets of Russian businessmen totaling more than $5.4 billion.

Source. This is reported by the BBC with reference to the Russian opposition telegram channel "We Can Explain" and SBU data.

This amount is almost equal to the state budget expenditures in 2023 for health care ($5.6 billion) and exceeds the amount allocated for education ($3.9 billion).

Unlike Russian assets seized in the West, these funds can already be used to benefit Ukraine's economy, the newspaper writes.

The leader in terms of seized assets as of early October was Russian businessman Mikhail Fridman. Back in May 2022, the Ukrainian authorities seized his assets worth $416 million, which were held in accounts at Alfa-Bank. The seizure included securities of Cypriot companies affiliated with the businessman, as well as $15.7 million held in accounts with the bank.

In October 2023, a Ukrainian court seized $460 million worth of assets of Friedman and two other co-owners of Alfa-Bank, but this amount has not yet been included in the statistics: the authorities have not yet clarified how much of it belongs to Friedman personally.

Oleg Deripaska is the leader in terms of the number of seized assets: 350 properties worth $270 million were seized from him and transferred to Ukrainian state ownership.

These include the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, Hlukhiv Quartzite Quarry, Khust Quarry, and Zhezholiv Quarry, as well as a seaport complex, apartments, administrative buildings, production workshops, vehicles, and special equipment.

Other Russian entrepreneurs who lost their property in Ukraine include Alexander Babakov, Yevgeny Giner, Mikhail Voevodin, Alisher Usmanov, Mikhail Shelkov and other businessmen, the newspaper writes.

Most of the assets of Russian businessmen will be nationalized. However, some of them will be used to prove in court that their owners are involved in financing Russia's military aggression, the SBU said.

Background. As a reminder, Friedman wants to return to Britain, but he will be forced to "use public transportation" there.
