The Russian model of spacecraft production is not competitive with other countries. This was stated by Yuri Borisov, CEO of Roskosmos, as quoted by RBC.

He noted that the United States and China produce significantly more satellites per year than Russia.

According to Borisov, the United States has production facilities that allow it to build about 3,000 spacecraft annually. In China, there are six production facilities capable of producing between 1,200 and 1,500 satellites per year. In Russia, this number is limited to only 40 vehicles per year.

"We are uncompetitive. We face a huge task to turn the situation around," Borisov concluded. He emphasized that the global space grouping has grown tenfold over the past ten years and now includes more than 8,900 satellites. The number of Russian satellites is about 220, which is only 2.5% of the total.

The head of Roscosmos also pointed to changes in the structure of the industry itself. He said that instead of heavy and expensive satellites, multi-satellite constellations are now being created, like Starlink, which quickly fills the group when one of the vehicles is decommissioned.

Borisov emphasized the need to change the production model in Russia. According to him, the current assembly time for one satellite is about 18 months, which prevents the creation of effective multi-satellite constellations.

Background. As a reminder, SpaceX has signed an agreement to launch European satellites – two Galileo satellites will be launched as part of the mission.
