Democrats in the US Senate block Republican bill to help Israel without Ukraine
Senators are writing their own allies funding bill and could introduce it as early as this week

Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked Republican efforts to gain quick approval of an emergency aid bill for Israel that passed the House last week. The bill does not include military aid to Ukraine.

Republican Senator Roger Marshall said: "Time is of the essence, and it is imperative that the Senate does not delay the delivery of this critical aid to Israel by a single day," he said.
Representatives of the Democratic majority in the upper house of the US Congress emphasized the importance of providing aid to Ukraine and Israel in addition to humanitarian aid, border security funding, and money to confront China in the Indo-Pacific.
They recalled that this was included in the $106 billion funding request that President Joe Biden sent to Congress last month.
The House bill provides $14.3 billion for Israel. The funds would include $4 billion for the purchase of Israeli Iron Dome and David's Sling defense systems to counter short-range missiles, as well as the provision of equipment from US warehouses.
"Our allies in Ukraine can no more afford a delay than our allies in Israel can," said Senator Patty Murray, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Senate leaders are writing their own bill on additional funding for allies and hope to introduce it this week.
Background. The US administration reportedly called on Congress to allocate $11.8 billion in aid to Ukraine, with officials explaining that direct budgetary support for Ukraine is inextricably linked to its success on the battlefield.
