The United States has announced its intention to "kill" the Russian gas project Arctic LNG 2
They plan to do this by imposing sanctions and cooperating with G7 partners

Washington will seek to shut down the Russian gas project Arctic LNG 2, which is being implemented by Novatek.
Source. This was stated by Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Jeffrey Payette during a hearing in the US Senate.
It is noted that the United States wants to replace Russian gas with its own LNG.
According to Pyatt, Washington last week imposed new sanctions against the Arctic LNG 2 project and the entities involved in it:
"Our goal is to kill this project. And we're doing that by imposing sanctions, working with our G7 partners," he emphasized.
The United States is the world leader in LNG supplies. This country accounts for more than 40% of all liquefied natural gas exports, and it intends to expand this share.
"Arctic LNG 2 is Novatek's second major LNG export project after the Yamal LNG plant, launched in 2017, with a capacity of 16.5 million tons per year.
The project is located near the northwestern coast of the Gydansky Peninsula in the Tazovsky District of Yamal. "Arctic LNG 2 envisages the construction of three liquefied natural gas production lines with a capacity of 6.6 million tons per year each. The total capacity of the three lines will be 19.8 million tons of LNG and up to 1.6 million tons of stable gas condensate per year.
On November 2, the United States imposed sanctions on Arctic Energy, a subsidiary of NOVATEK. Another 10% each belongs to France's Total Energies, two Chinese energy companies (CNPC and CNOOC) and a consortium of Japanese companies (Mitsui and JOGMEC).
Earlier, the U.S. Treasury Department set January 31, 2024 as the deadline for completing the Arctic LNG 2 deal.
As part of the sanctions, American legal entities are prohibited from conducting transactions with Arctic LNG 2, but transactions to exit the company's capital and debt obligations are allowed, provided that payment is made to a blocked account.
