Israel agrees to daily 4-hour humanitarian pauses between shelling of Gaza Strip

Israel has agreed to a daily four-hour cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip to allow civilians remaining in the north of the Strip to evacuate to the south and to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Source. This was reported on Thursday by the White House, cited by Radio Liberty.

According to US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, President Joe Biden asked for daily humanitarian pauses during a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.

In recent days, Israel has announced the opening of a humanitarian corridor for several hours. In the northern part of the Strip, there are battles between the Israeli military and Hamas units. Part of the Gaza Strip is already under the control of the Israeli military, including a narrow strip separating its southern part from the northern part.

Many countries around the world are calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, pointing to the large number of civilian casualties. According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, the number has reached 11,000. Israel says it will not agree to a ceasefire, at least until all hostages taken by Hamas are released.

The United States does not call on Israel to ceasefire, but it is increasingly supporting humanitarian pauses in the fighting.

In total, Palestinian groups are holding about 240 hostages, Israelis and citizens of other countries, in the Gaza Strip.

It is reported that the heads of the US and Israeli intelligence services – the CIA and Mossad – William Burns and David Barnea met in Qatar with the Prime Minister of that country to discuss the issue of releasing the hostages. It is known that Qatar maintains contacts with the Hamas leadership and periodically acts as an intermediary.

Background. Meanwhile, analysts point out that the war in the Gaza Strip has jeopardized the peace summit on Ukraine – European politicians had hoped to convene another summit of world leaders by the end of the year, but now it is unlikely.
