"No matter how strong the current crisis diplomacy in the Middle East is, it is also important for us to confront geopolitical challenges here on the ground," the politician said at a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, November 13.
"Our support will be significantly expanded, especially next year," she added.
However, Burbock did not provide any details about her plans for the next year. Speaking about the coming weeks and months, she mentioned the so-called "winter defense shield," which includes the supply of another Patriot air defense system and power generators to Ukraine.
According to the minister, this should prevent Russian attacks and help Ukrainians stay warm in the coming winter. Burbock also commented on the possible hopes of Russian dictator Putin to reduce EU support due to the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East:
"Putin is rejoicing too early, given the dramatic situation in the world. Because we will not only continue to support Ukraine, we will expand and increase it."
According to the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, the German coalition government has agreed to allocate 8 billion euros for military aid to Ukraine in 2024 instead of the previously announced four.
Last weekend, representatives of the Ministries of Defense and Finance did not comment on the media reports, citing the current parliamentary procedure. The Bundestag's Budget Committee will discuss the 2024 spending next Thursday, November 16, after which the budget will be discussed in plenary.
Background. In early November, Germany announced that it had delivered 25 Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine, as promised earlier. The shipment also included reconnaissance drones and radars. The total amount of German aid to Ukraine, including humanitarian aid, since Russia's invasion of Ukraine has amounted to about 24 billion euros.
