Polish Foreign Ministry liquidates subcommittee to investigate the cause of the Smolensk plane crash

The Polish Ministry of Defense has liquidated a subcommittee that was investigating the causes of the 2010 Smolensk plane crash that killed the country's then-political leadership.

Source. This is stated in a statement on the website of the Polish Ministry of Defense on Friday, December 15.

Members of the subcommittee have until Monday, December 18, to "calculate all real estate, documentation, and equipment used for work," the statement said.

At the same time, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said that the liquidation of this subcommittee means "the end of spending hundreds of millions of zlotys on activities that have nothing to do with explaining the causes of the Smolensk tragedy," RAR quoted him as saying.

He added that to ensure transparency in this matter, "all cases related to the commission's activities will be disclosed."

Poland has resumed the investigation into the plane crash near Smolensk in 2016. The government subcommittee stated that the deaths of the passengers of the presidential Tu-154 were caused by an explosion.

The subcommittee concluded that the left wing of the Tu-154M was destroyed by an internal explosion, not a collision with a birch tree. The commission also found a recording of the moment of the explosion on the plane's flight data recorder.

At the same time, the Polish TV channel TVN24 published an investigation into the work of the subcommittee, in which it accused its members of concealing some of the data and questioned the conclusion about the explosion on board the plane. According to the journalists, the commission ignored the results of examinations that did not confirm the explosion.

Background. On April 10, 2010, a Tu-154M plane carrying a Polish state delegation crashed near the military airfield in Smolensk. The crash killed all 96 people on board: the spouses Lech and Maria Kaczynski, as well as representatives of Poland's political, military, and religious elite. The plane was flying to Russia to attend events marking the 70th anniversary of the Katyn tragedy.
