Russia is using a type of irritant, a gaseous chemical warfare agent with irritant effect that can temporarily incapacitate a person. According to one of the medics, there have been nine such incidents in the area of Orikhiv, Zaporizhzhia region, in recent weeks.
The Russian military dropped caustic and flammable gas from drones on Ukrainian positions. One person died as a result. The injured soldiers said that the occupiers attack with gas to sow panic, after which they start regular shelling or drone attacks.
"At first I saw smoke. We ran out of the trench and the gas suddenly caught fire. The trench was on fire. This gas burns, it blinds you, you can't breathe, it immediately shoots into your throat. We didn't even have a second," the Ukrainian fighter said.
CNN does not name the Ukrainian intelligence official with whom the journalists spoke, but he said that Russia is using a type of CS (chlorine gas), a tear gas that can temporarily disable a person by irritating the eyes, nose, mouth, lungs and skin.
The United Nations Chemical Weapons Convention prohibits the use of such substances in time of war.
