Borrell: Putin will not stop until he wins in Ukraine

In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, EU diplomat Josep Borrell said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be satisfied with a partial victory in Ukraine and intends to continue a long war until he gains full control of the country.

According to Borrell, the Russian leader is also counting on a change of power in the United States, where presidential elections will be held next year. Donald Trump, who is running for the US presidency, has expressed his intention to stop military support for Ukraine and reach a compromise with the Russian authorities.

"Putin cannot be satisfied with only a part of Ukraine and a situation where the rest of Ukraine belongs to the European Union. He cannot be satisfied with a limited territorial victory. He will not stop the war – especially before the American elections, which could give him a much more favorable scenario. So we have to be prepared for a high-intensity conflict that will last for a long time. Putin has decided to fight the war to victory," said Josep Borel.

The EU chief of diplomacy also called the war in Ukraine a moment that decides the fate of the whole of Europe, as Russia, according to him, threatens not only the Ukrainian state but the continent as a whole.

In this regard, he called on the EU to act decisively and not to delay in helping Ukraine.

"If we don't change course quickly, if we don't mobilize all our capabilities, it will allow Putin to win the war in Ukraine," he said.

Borrell added that in February 2022, 150,000 Russian troops were concentrated on Ukraine's borders, and now 450,000 Russian servicemen are involved in hostilities in the country, which is "three times as many."

According to Borrell, the reasons for such ambitions of Russia should be sought in its historical heritage.

"Russia could never become a nation. It has always been an empire: with the tsar, with the soviets, and now with Putin. For Russia and its political identity, this is a permanent thing, and as a result, it has become a threat to its neighbors – and especially to us," Borrell said.

Background. As a reminder, the European Union has allocated another 200 million euros for training the Ukrainian military. 34,000 Ukrainian soldiers have already been trained under the European initiative.
