Serhiy Plohyi: Putin's global appeasement policy led to war in Ukraine

Participants in a discussion at Ukraine House at the World Economic Forum in Davos heard new warnings about the dangers of appeasing Russia.

Director of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Harvard University Serhiy Plohyi warned that the policy of world leaders to appease Vladimir Putin has led to war in Ukraine:

"The path to this war is largely a history of appeasement. This is the appeasement of the 1930s, repeated in the 1990s and 2000s. Unfortunately, it is difficult to fully realize this until a catastrophe of the scale of this war occurs. That is why we should be very careful about using terms like "appeasement" now, because there are parallels with the 1930s," he said.

"But having the largest war in Europe since World War II, I am afraid that we have no choice but to look back and learn the lessons of the 1930s and 1940s," the scholar emphasized.

Background. As mentioned earlier, this morning David Cameron compared the current situation to the 1930s, when the policy of appeasement of the aggressor proved disastrous for the whole world.
