German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for an increase in European arms production.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new large weapons production plant, Scholz warned that those who want peace must be able to deter aggressors, the BBC reports.

His remarks were a response to Donald Trump's statement during the election campaign that he would encourage Russia to attack any NATO country that did not spend the promised defence funds.

Scholz said that any revision of NATO's mutual defence clause is extremely dangerous.

"Let me make it clear in light of recent events that any revision of NATO's collective defence guarantees is irresponsible, dangerous and only serves Russia's interests. No one should play or bargain with Europe's security," he said.

Rheinmetall, which Scholz visited, is investing more than $300 million in a new plant, but its CEO said it would be decades before Europe is ready to defend itself again.

The EU has not yet reached its goal of supplying Ukraine with the ammunition it needs to fight Russia.

Background. Earlier, European Diplomacy Chief Josep Borrell promised Ukraine more than a million pieces of ammunition from the EU by the end of the year.
