Von der Leyen: the first tranche of the EU's funding for Ukraine will be received in March

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen met in Kyiv to discuss, among other things, financing, Ukrainian exports, and cooperation in the defence industry.

"We talked about our cooperation in the defence industry and coordinated the next steps within the Ukraine Facility initiative, which provides funding of EUR 50 billion over 4 years. Ms Ursula said that the first tranche of €4.5 billion will be disbursed in March," Shmyhal wrote on his Telegram channel.

The parties also discussed the situation on the Ukrainian-Polish border.

"I presented the Ukrainian 'Plan of Understanding' to resolve this crisis. We look forward to a constructive trilateral dialogue," Shmyhal said.

In turn, von der Leyen tweeted:

"We discussed the next steps for the €50 billion loan to Ukraine. The first disbursement of €4.5bn will take place in March. We discussed how to deal with Ukrainian exports and solve problems on the land border. And our joint work on defence."

Background. As a reminder, the European Parliament's relevant committees have supported the decision to allocate EUR 50 billion in a multi-year financial assistance programme to Ukraine.
