France becomes the first country in the world to enshrine women's right to abortion in the Constitution

The French parliament has passed an amendment enshrining women's right to abortion in the constitution. Thus, France has become the first country in the world to guarantee the right to abortion in the Basic Law.

The amendment was initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron.

"This is French pride and a signal to the whole world. We need to celebrate together the emergence of a new freedom in the constitution of the republic," he wrote on Twitter.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal also commented on the parliament's decision:

"We say to all women: your body belongs to you and no one has the right to decide for you."

According to polls, about 85% of the population supported the reform.

Abortion has been legal in France since 1975. Since then, the law has been amended nine times, each time expanding women's right to terminate a pregnancy.

Last year, French President Emmanuel Macron promised to make women's freedom to seek abortion "irreversible" by including it in the Constitution.

After the vote in France, the Vatican again spoke out against abortion and said that "there can be no 'right' to take a human life".

The amendment was the 25th in the Constitution, which has been in force since 1958, and the first since 2008. Out of 855 members of both chambers of the French parliament – the Senate and the National Assembly – 780 voted in favour and 72 against.
