US says new $300m aid package for Ukraine will last "for a couple of weeks"

A new military aid package to Ukraine will be enough "for a couple of weeks", US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has said, moscowtimes.eu reports.

"On behalf of President Joe Biden, I want to announce a $300 million emergency military aid package to Ukraine to address some of its most pressing needs," Sullivan said, adding that it would only last for a short period.

"We're not talking about months, we're talking about weeks, more like a couple of weeks," he said.

Earlier it became known that the US authorities have found funds that can be used to supply ammunition and military equipment to Ukraine without Congressional approval, and now the White House is preparing a new support package worth $300 million.

The package will include:

  • APAM, an older version of the long-range ATACMS missile that can fire up to 160 km and carry a cluster bomb;
  • 155 mm projectiles;
  • guided missiles for volley fire.

Due to the opposition of some Republicans in the House of Representatives, the US Congress has been unable to approve more than $60 billion in aid to Ukraine since the beginning of last autumn.

Physical deliveries of arms stopped at the end of December 2023, with the last tranche amounting to $250 million. The lack of ammunition played a major role in the defeat of the Ukrainian army in Avdiivka, which the Armed Forces had to surrender in mid-February, analysts say.

Background. As CNN reported, Russia produces three times more shells than all Western countries. Currently, Russian troops are firing about 10,000 shells a day, compared to 2,000 on the Ukrainian side.
