New head of the ICC: Putin will answer for the war against Ukraine

On Wednesday (20 March), the new head of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Tomoko Akane, expressed confidence that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will be brought to justice for war crimes in Ukraine.

In response to journalists' questions, she quoted a Chinese proverb: "Heaven's vengeance is slow but sure," DW writes.

Akane acknowledged the problems faced by the ICC. Among other things, she noted that over the past two years, there have been no cases of detention of people against whom arrest warrants have been issued.

Judge Tomoko Akane of Japan was among three ICC judges who signed an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin and Children's Ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova in March 2023 on charges of illegally deporting children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia. In March 2024, she took over from Karim Khan at the ICC.

In Russia, Akane is facing a case under articles on deliberately illegal detention and preparation for an attack on a representative of a foreign state. The Russian Interior Ministry has put her on the wanted list.

On 5 March 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for the commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces' long-range aviation, Sergei Kobylash, and the commander of the Black Sea Fleet, Viktor Sokolov, on suspicion of crimes committed during the war in Ukraine between 10 October 2022 and 9 March 2023.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia does not recognise the decisions of the International Criminal Court.
