US condemns Russia's "brutal attack" on Ukraine's energy sector and calls for immediate air defence

The United States has condemned Russia's "brutal attacks" on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure on the night of 22 March and called for immediate air defence equipment for Ukraine.

Source. This was reported by the Voice of America.

US National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said:

"We condemn Russia's brutal attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure, which Ukraine reports are the largest-scale Russian air attacks against Ukraine's energy grid since the beginning of this war."

Watson said Ukraine should be urgently provided with interceptor missiles for its air defence systems.

"It is critical to provide additional interceptors for air defence systems to defend against these attacks as soon as possible. We are talking about lives. Any further delay is inexcusable," she stressed.

Watson called on the U.S. House of Representatives to immediately approve the Ukraine Supplemental Assistance Bill to "provide this vital equipment to Ukraine."

U.S. President Joe Biden's request for additional assistance to Ukraine includes $60 billion in funding. This request was approved by the Senate, but the other chamber of Congress, the House of Representatives, did not put the bill to a vote.

As reported, on the night of 22 March, Russia used more than 90 missiles and 60 Iranian drones in a large-scale shelling of Ukrainian territory, according to President Zelenskyy.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell also called for an end to Russian attacks against the Ukrainian population and energy infrastructure.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda called for Ukraine to be provided with not only ammunition, but also long-range missiles and air defence systems to build a wall of defence.

"Because this is the first frontier of freedom. The next one will be the European Union," he stressed.

Nauseda pointed to the extreme danger of such "terrorist attacks" for energy infrastructure.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that Russian aggression has "no limits" and that Ukraine is defending "peace in Europe".

"This morning, Russia launched more than 90 missiles and 60 Shahed drones into Ukraine, hitting critical infrastructure. There is no limit to their aggression. Ukraine must be equipped with everything it needs to resist the invasion and defend peace in Europe," Sandu tweeted.
