Kharkiv Thermal Power Plant destroyed: experts say it will take years to restore

As a result of Russian strikes on 22 March, Kharkiv TPP lost its main heat and power generation capacity. The city is now being supplied from other regions, and it will take years to restore the plant.

Source. This is reported by Ukrinform with reference to the press service of PJSC Kharkivska CHPP-5.

"On 22 March, the energy sector of Kharkiv region and TPP-5 in particular suffered the greatest damage since the beginning of hostilities as a result of a massive enemy attack. Today, the city is being supplied by other regions," the statement said.

It is noted that with the destruction of TPP-5, Kharkiv has lost its main heat and electricity generation capacity for the city. It will only be possible to fully assess the extent of the damage caused to the thermal power plant and the necessary restoration work at the facility after the inspection and debris removal is completed. But, according to the power engineers, it is already clear that this is an extremely labour-intensive and costly process, comparable to new construction.

According to Alexander Minkovich, Chief Executive Officer of Kharkivska TPP-5 Alexander Minkovich, the coordination, support and assistance of the regional and city authorities are felt during this difficult period, but the task is very difficult.

"The restoration of the thermal power plant involves the manufacture of exclusive equipment for power units, including turbines, generators, etc. If the work is fully funded, and if we receive assistance with the production and supply of equipment, the reconstruction process will take several years," he stressed.

According to Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, last Friday the enemy actually destroyed the main energy facilities that powered the city.

The media also reported that DTEK Group lost about 50% of its generating capacity as a result of a massive missile attack by Russian troops on the Ukrainian power grid on 22 March.
