The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom will not issue a permit to Southwind Airlines, a Turkish-registered airline, to fly to Finland.

The airline had previously applied to Traficom for permission to start operations. The regulator, however, believes that the flights do not comply with the EU's sanctions against Russia.

"In our assessment, we proceeded from the fact that the bulk of the ownership and control of Southwind Airlines is not held by Turkish nationals. In our assessment, the company is owned by a Russian entity," Jarkko Saarimäki, the agency's director general, said in a press release.

Last year, the German newspaper Bild reported that Russia had established a new airline in Turkey to transport migrants from Turkey to Russia and Belarus for further transport to the EU borders.

The carrier's management denied the allegations of ties to Russia.

Background. As reported, Finland has donated warships to Ukraine. They will be delivered in transit through Romania.
