The minister will leave his post on 10 April. Earlier, the opposition United List submitted a request for Karins' resignation to the Saeima.
On 22 March, the Latvian Prosecutor General's Office opened a criminal investigation into the embezzlement of budget funds against Karins. The reason was the way the official used special flights for business trips during the period when he headed the government (2019-2023).
According to the State Chancellery, from September 2021 to September 2023, €1.36 million was spent on these flights, including almost €614,000 from the Latvian budget (the rest was covered by the European Union), which exceeds the amounts stipulated in the relevant agreements.
Krisjanis Karinš is the second number on the New Unity list in the upcoming European Parliament elections, Delfi notes. SKDS opinion polls have shown a drop in the popularity of New Unity amid the corruption scandal.
