German opposition leader: Ukraine's defeat in war is becoming more likely
TAURUS missiles would allow Ukraine to seriously disrupt Russian army supply lines, Merz emphasises

The defeat of Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia is becoming more and more likely, said Friedrich Merz, head of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In this regard, Merz once again called for Kyiv to be supplied with TAURUS long-range missiles.
According to him, the head of the CDU is watching the situation in Ukraine "with growing concern".
russia has not yet achieved its military goals, but "has put its economy on a military footing and is producing weapons and ammunition in volumes far in excess of current needs," Merz said.
Russia is massively arming itself and using much more weapons for this purpose than for the war with Ukraine, dpa quoted him as saying.
"TAURUS cruise missiles are not a panacea, but they would allow Ukraine to seriously disrupt the supply lines of the Russian army," the politician said, justifying the need to supply these long-range missiles to Kyiv.
Merz stressed that both TAURUS manufacturers and high-ranking Bundeswehr officials have stated that these missiles can be used without the participation of German military personnel. Therefore, the CDU leader believes that such supplies will not make Germany a party to the conflict, as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz fears.
Earlier, Friedrich Merz has repeatedly called for TAURUS to be supplied to Ukraine. In particular, the CDU chairman commented on the security guarantee agreement signed on 16 February in Berlin by Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as follows:
"If such an agreement is reached, then TAURUS cruise missiles must be delivered. Because no paper will help Ukraine and its people – only concrete help will help them."
Merz also criticised the "slow and indecisive" supply of ammunition to Kyiv.
In mid-January, the Bundestag rejected a draft resolution to start supplying Ukraine with TAURUS missiles, introduced by the CDU/CSU faction, although many MPs from the ruling coalition parties had expressed support for the transfer of these weapons to Kyiv.
