Kremlin threatens Lithuania over deployment of German troops
The country intends to receive about 5,000 German troops in the next 3 years

Russia will take "special measures" in response to the deployment of about 20 German soldiers to Lithuania and Germany's plans to open a military base in the country, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"This is a continuation of the escalation of tensions, the creation of hotbeds of danger for us near our borders, which, of course, requires us to take special measures to ensure our own security," Peskov said.
Lithuania agreed with Germany to deploy a German military brigade of about 4,800 soldiers to the country by 2027 late last year.
This measure was necessary to strengthen NATO's eastern flank against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"The eastern flank has now moved to the east, and it is Germany's duty to defend it," said German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.
According to him, most of the soldiers will arrive in Lithuania in 2025-2026, and their families will receive "attractive conditions", including the possibility of attending German-language schools, kindergartens, housing and air travel.
According to Taggesschau, the main places of deployment will be the city of Rukla and a training ground near the village of Rudninkai near the border with Belarus, and the soldiers will live with their families in Vilnius and Kaunas.
