Court convicts first defendant in the murder of cameraman Hutchins on the set of Rust

A court in New Mexico has sentenced weapons props maker Hannah Gutierrez-Reed to 18 months in prison in the case of the involuntary manslaughter of cameraman Galina Hutchins on the set of Rust.

42-year-old Galina Hutchins died on 21 October 2021 on the set. The gun held by actor Alec Baldwin turned out to be loaded with real bullets. In addition to her, director Joel Sousa was also shot.

Baldwin was also charged with involuntary manslaughter, but the charges were later dropped: it turned out that the weapon had been modified in such a way that it could fire on its own without pulling the trigger.

Baldwin himself said that he did not pull the trigger. The actor also stressed that "someone put a live round in the weapon, a round that shouldn't even have been on the set".

In January of this year, prosecutors re-indicted Baldwin for the manslaughter of the cameraman.

After an examination, prosecutors in New Mexico concluded that the shot could not have been fired without the trigger being pulled.

Baldwin's lawyers told the BBC that they were "fully prepared for a trial".

The charge was based on two alternative assumptions: Baldwin was either negligent in the use of a firearm or acted with "total disregard or indifference to the safety of others". Prosecutors have indicated that the actor can only be convicted on one of these charges, not both.

A lawyer representing the Hutchins family said his clients were "looking forward to the criminal trial".
