Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonite has signed a memorandum of understanding with German defence concern Rheinmetall that will allow the country to build a plant for the production of artillery ammunition.

Source. This was reported by Delfi.

"Today we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rheinmetall, which laid the foundation for the construction of an artillery ammunition plant and our long-term cooperation," she tweeted. – "It's time for us, as democratic countries, to strengthen our arsenal to defend freedom.

"No specific location was mentioned. I have no doubt that we will find a site, we need a very large area for such a production. We are looking for a solution that would not require combining many plots, but would prepare an optimal solution so that a larger area could be used at once," Šimonite said.

In early April, the Lithuanian Ministry of Economy and Innovation proposed amendments to a number of laws that would allow major Western arms and ammunition manufacturers to quickly relocate production to the country.

The new amendments will allow the government to consider large investments in the defence industry as projects of direct importance to national security.

Accordingly, investors will be able to start construction without waiting for a permit, but it will still need to be obtained before the construction is completed.

Background. Meanwhile, it has become known that the French-German howitzer manufacturer Caesar will open a division in Ukraine. The company will produce ammunition "closer to the front line".
