Ukraine's exports reach pre-Russian invasion levels - Svyrydenko

In April, Ukraine exported a record volume of products: last month, exports totalled more than 13 million tonnes, surpassing the figures for February 2022.

Source. This was announced on Wednesday, 1 May, by the First Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko, who specified that in monetary terms, exports reached $3.3 billion in April.

According to the document, Ukraine has thus reached pre-war export levels.

"This is 1.3 million tonnes more than in March," Svyrydenko said. The Minister clarified that despite the Russian aggression, the country continues to work "further to increase exports, primarily non-resource exports."

According to the head of the Ministry of Economy, the growth in exports was influenced by the opening of an alternative sea corridor in the summer of 2023, which allows Ukraine to export grain and metal, among other things.

The document notes that on 1 March in London, during a visit to the UK by a Ukrainian delegation led by Yulia Svyrydenko, it was announced that the UNITY Affordable Ship Insurance Programme, implemented by Marsh McLennan and the Lloyd's of London insurance platform in cooperation with the Ukrainian government, would be expanded.

The programme covers not only the maritime transport of grain and other important foodstuffs, but also vessels carrying all non-military cargo, including metal vessels. In addition, insurance is available for container shipping, the text says.

Exports have been positively affected by the expansion of the capacity of the Solidarity Lines, primarily with Moldova and Romania, as well as improved conditions for transporting goods by rail to the Danube ports.

According to Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsia, 1,300 ships have used the temporary sea route that Ukraine created with its partners after Russia withdrew from the Black Sea grain deal. Even in such difficult conditions, Ukrainian agricultural products are being shipped to 40 countries.

In February 2024, Ukraine exported a record-breaking 8 million tonnes of cargo through the temporary sea corridor, Ukrainian media reported.

Background. In February this year, the government launched a new communication system for export control, which will allow businesses to receive a range of export control services electronically.
