Switzerland insists on Russia's participation in peace summit

The Swiss government said on Thursday that "at this stage" Russia is not on the list of countries invited to the peace summit.

The invited delegations include members of the G7, G20, BRICS, EU, international organisations and two religious representatives, the Swiss government said.

"The main goal of the summit is to inspire the future peace process," the statement said.

To achieve this goal, the summit intends to:

* provide a platform for dialogue on how to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine on the basis of international law and the UN Charter

* promote a common understanding of the possible framework for achieving this goal;

* jointly define a roadmap for engaging both sides in a future peace process.

Achieving these goals requires the participation of a wide range of states, and Switzerland has a long tradition of promoting dialogue, the statement said.

"At this stage, Russia has not been invited. Switzerland has always demonstrated its readiness to send Russia an invitation to this summit. However, Russia has repeatedly and publicly stated that it is not interested in participating in this first summit. The summit in Switzerland is intended to launch a peace process. Switzerland is convinced that Russia should be involved in this process. A peace process without Russia is unthinkable," the Swiss Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Moscow, meanwhile, believes that since Switzerland joined the European Union's sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, it is not trustworthy as a neutral mediator.

Background. As reported, the first Peace Summit will take place on 15-16 June in Switzerland. Zelenskyy expects the meeting to be attended by heads of state and government from every continent.

Earlier, Mind reported that Russia wants to disrupt the global peace summit in Switzerland and already has a plan to do so. Zelenskyy promised to share intelligence information with foreign partners.
