A group of Russian recruiters who sent locals to fight in Ukraine were arrested in India
Thanks to the efforts of diplomats, several Indians were released early from the Russian army and returned home

Four people have been arrested in India for recruiting locals to fight in Russia's war against Ukraine, India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reported on Twitter (X), moscowtimes.eu reports.
According to the investigation, the attackers were looking for potential mercenaries in several states. They acted through social media and local recruiters, offering "high-paying jobs in Russia". The recruiters promised young people help with admission to private universities in Russia, as well as free visa extensions.
They promised two Indians positions as "assistants" in the Russian army. Those who agreed upon arrival in Russia were sent for military training and then against their will to a combat zone, the CBI said.
The key participant in the scheme was Nijil Jobi Bensam, an Indian citizen from Tamil Nadu. He had previously worked in Russia as a translator. The visa and tickets to Russia were arranged by Anthony Michael Elagovan, an Indian resident of Mumbai. Both were detained and arrested in late April.
The day before, on 7 May, operatives detained two more recruiters in Kerala – Arun Norbert and Yesudas Priyan. The investigation considers them to be the main recruiters of the network. The investigation against them is still ongoing, the bureau added.
In early March, the CBI reported that about 35 Indian citizens had been recruited into the Russian army in just one month. Two were killed and several others were seriously injured.
The country's Foreign Ministry said that every case of deception of Indians to participate in the war is firmly discussed with Moscow. Thanks to the efforts of the foreign ministry, several Indians were discharged from the army early and returned home.
Background. As reported in March, India uncovered a network of men recruited for the war against Ukraine, luring them through deception.
