Zelensky: The whole world is to blame for the situation near Kharkiv, but now it can help

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that two American Patriot air defence systems are needed for the effective defence of Kharkiv, and the whole world is to blame for the situation in Kharkiv region.

"The situation is very serious. We cannot afford to lose Kharkiv... All we need are two Patriot systems. Russia will not be able to occupy Kharkiv if we have them," Zelenskyy was quoted as saying by ABC News.

Answering a question from ABC News correspondent James Longman, who met with the president in Kharkiv, whether the United States was to blame for the escalation of the situation in Kharkiv, Zelenskyy said the whole world was to blame.

"It is the world's fault. They gave Putin the opportunity to occupy. But now the world can help," the Ukrainian president said.

An ABC News correspondent told Zelenskyy that many Americans are concerned about the amount of money the US is giving to Ukraine.

"This money is not transferred to Ukraine," Zelenskyy replied, "It's money spent on American factories, creating American jobs... And we are fighting not only for our freedom. If it were not for Ukraine, it would be another country (opposing the Russians – ed.)."

Zelenskyy was also asked what he thought of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken's recent visit to Kyiv. "Zelenskyy hesitated, I could feel his disappointment," Longman writes.

"Dialogue is good," the Ukrainian president said, "but we need help now.

"Here, alongside the fierce fighting on the frontline, there is a sense that Blinken's visit was little more than a public show of support," an ABC News correspondent shared his impressions.

Background. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that Russians are shooting civilians in Vovchansk, Kharkiv region. According to him, active hostilities are taking place in the northern part of the city. Evacuations have been ongoing in this area until now, but Russians have begun to block these opportunities and take the city's residents prisoner.
