India to participate in peace summit on Ukraine organised by Switzerland
It is the only country from the Global South to attend the conference so far

India will participate in a peace summit on Ukraine to be held in Switzerland on 15-16 June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an interview with Amarujala.
According to him, the country will "support the voice of the Global South" to shape the international dialogue.
"India will participate in all important summits that promote global peace, security and development as an agenda," Modi said, adding that the country had received an invitation from Switzerland.
The level of participation is being specified: it will depend on "timing, logistics and concurrent commitments".
Modi added that India has also accepted an invitation to the G7 summit, which will be held from 13 to 15 June in Italy.
India is the only country in the Global South that has confirmed its participation in the summit on Ukraine at a high level.
Brazilian President Luiz da Silva had previously refused to attend the event because representatives of Russia, a direct participant in the conflict, were not invited. At the same time, Switzerland explained this decision by the position of Moscow itself, which had criticised the summit and publicly stated in advance that it was not interested in participating. The organisers expressed hope that Russia would change its attitude in the future, as the peace process is impossible without it.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will also not attend the peace conference on Ukraine in Switzerland, as he will be busy with the "constitutional processes" that will begin in the country after the general elections on 29 May, the official representative of the head of state said.
It is unclear whether China will send a delegation. Earlier, Xi Jinping said that the republic supports an international peace conference "that will be recognised by both Russia and Ukraine".
On 15 May, Swiss President Viola Amerd noted that more than 50 countries had registered for the summit, including South America, Africa and the Middle East, but China was not among them.
Background. As reported, Switzerland insists on Russia's participation in the peace summit. "At this stage" Russia was not invited to the peace summit, but the peace process is impossible without its participation, the country's authorities insist.
