Ukrainian drones strike a gunpowder factory in Russia

Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR) kamikaze drones have attacked a gunpowder factory in Kotovsk, Tambov region, Russia, a military intelligence source told Kyiv Independent.

According to the source, the facility was attacked by drones. The amount of damage is being determined.

Russian Telegram channels posted a video showing smoke after an alleged explosion at the plant.

The governor of the Tambov region, Maxim Yegorov, said that Russian air defence had shot down all two drones. No injuries or damage were reported.

However, the Tambov telegram channel Tverdiy Znak reported, citing a local resident, that one of the drones may have been shot down. The channel also published a video showing the drone, shots of automatic weapons (apparently used to try to shoot down the drone), and then a loud explosion.

The Tambov Gunpowder Plant is one of Russia's largest industrial enterprises, producing ammunition for the army, including powder for small arms cartridges.

Its production has reportedly increased by one third since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In 2023, the plant was subject to US sanctions.

Ukrainian drones struck the plant in January and November last year.

Background. At the end of June, the Ukrainian General Staff confirmed strikes on Russian refineries, a Shahed warehouse and radar stations. Targets were hit in Krasnodar Krai, Bryansk Oblast and the temporarily occupied Crimea.
