Exit polls in Britain: Labour wins by a landslide, Rishi Sunak concedes defeat

The Labour Party, which has been in opposition for 14 years, is leading the parliamentary elections in the UK. According to exit polls released after the polls closed on Thursday, 4 July, Labour won 410 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons.

The ruling Conservative Party, headed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, won 131 seats.

The Liberal Democrats came third with 61 seats.

Nigel Farage's right-wing populist party Reform UK came in fourth with 13 seats in parliament.

If the preliminary exit polls are confirmed, after the official announcement of the election results, Labour will return to power after 14 years and King Charles III will instruct the chairman of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, to form a new government.

Accordingly, Keir Starmer, who has repeatedly expressed support for Ukraine, will become the new Prime Minister.

The current Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, also managed to be re-elected in his constituency. At the same time, he acknowledged that the Conservatives had lost and said he had congratulated Starmer on his victory.

"Today, the transfer of power will take place in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides. This should give us all confidence in the stability and future of our country. The British people have delivered a sobering verdict today, there is much to learn and I accept responsibility for the defeat," Sunak said.

All seats in the House of Commons, the lower house of parliament, are allocated by direct vote. The winner is the candidate who receives the majority of votes in each of the 650 constituencies. The absolute majority in the House of Commons is 326 seats, and Labour is clearly on track to reach this mark.

Among the well-known Conservatives who have already officially lost and will not sit in the new parliament is Grant Shapps, who currently holds the post of Defence Secretary.

Background. Earlier we wrote that Labour, which won the election, wants to set up a special tribunal for Putin – the party stands for full support for Ukraine and promises to outline a clear path for Kyiv to join NATO.
