At the opening ceremony of the Olympics, South Korea was called North Korea: IOC apologises to Seoul

The South Korean delegation at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris was mistakenly presented as North Korean, Seoul demanded an explanation. The International Olympic Committee apologised to South Korea for the mistake.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Saturday, 27 July, apologised to South Korea for a mistake that occurred at the opening ceremony of the Summer Games in Paris. As a boat with South Korean athletes sailed along the Seine, the announcers announced in French and English that it was the DPRK delegation. The official name of South Korea is the Republic of Korea (ROK).

The North Korean delegation, which also took part in the opening ceremony, was correctly introduced.

The South Korean Ministry of Sports requested a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach and demanded explanations from the IOC and the Olympic organising committee, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.

The agency asked the country's Foreign Ministry to lodge a complaint with France at the government level and demanded that this should not happen again.

After that, the International Olympic Committee's account on the social network X posted a post in Korean: ‘We would like to apologise for the mistake that occurred during the introduction of the South Korean delegation during the opening ceremony.’ A similar statement was published in English.

Background. As reported, in May, the conflict between Seoul and Pyongyang took on an unexpected form. The DPRK began launching balloons with garbage and faeces across the border in the southern direction. At least two thousand such balloons have been launched, and on 24 July, one of them landed on the territory of the South Korean President's office. Pyongyang called this a response to South Korea's launch of balloons across the border with leaflets critical of Kim Jong-un, as well as dollar bills and USB drives with popular K-pop music videos and film products.
