The United States has begun moving tanks from Germany to Poland to strengthen NATO's eastern flank, The Moscow Times reports, citing Radio Zet.
As part of the manoeuvre, the US military is going to move equipment and ammunition from a military base in Mannheim, Germany, to a base in Powidz, Poland, which is located near Poznan. It is noted that the warehouses in Powidz are adjacent to the airport, which will allow for the immediate airlift of equipment and ammunition if necessary.
In total, 87 tanks, more than 150 infantry fighting vehicles and 18 self-propelled howitzers are planned to be deployed in Povidze. The equipment will be transferred by the end of September.
‘The movement of the convoys between the US military base and the Polish regional authorities in the area is coordinated by the Polish Army Movement Coordination Centre,’ the Gniezno District Office said.
Earlier, it was reported that the construction of a base to accommodate more than 1,000 US troops had been completed in Swietoszów, Poland. The military facility will be used to quickly assemble, receive supplies and equipment before moving to the area of tactical operations, explained Polish Brigadier General Dariusz Mendrala.
Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda called for preparations for war with Russia in case of Ukraine's defeat.
‘If we don't resist Russian imperialism and stop Putin, this voracious monster will attack further and further,’ Duda said.
According to him, the North Atlantic Alliance ‘should be so strong that no one would have any reason to attack it’. He stressed that other NATO members share the same view.
According to the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Putin is preparing for a large-scale war with NATO in the long term. According to analysts, this is evidenced by the increase in the number of troops, the transition to a military economy and the reform of the military-administrative division of Russia. In particular, the country has recreated the Moscow and Leningrad military districts, which will be able to concentrate forces on the western direction.
Background. As a reminder, the media, citing military sources, reported that NATO is compiling a list of signs that could indicate Russia's invasion of the EU at the preparation stage. The alliance is trying to find and close gaping holes in Europe's defence, but there are many of them and it requires a lot of money.
