Israel says it has killed the leader of the militant wing of Hamas, which organized the attack on Israel on October 7
The IDF tried to eliminate him for several years

The Israeli military confirmed that the head of the military wing of Hamas, Mohammed Deif, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip on July 13. Mohammed Deif is one of the main targets for the Israeli military, and Israel has been trying to eliminate him for several years. Hamas has not yet commented on the message of the Israel Defense Forces, writes the BBC.
Deif is said to be one of the masterminds of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 last year, in which around 1,200 Israelis and foreigners – mostly civilians – were killed and another 251 people were taken to Gaza as hostages.
This led to a major Israeli military operation in Gaza that killed more than 38,700 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health.
Israel's announcement followed the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Tehran, and senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
Deif has an almost mythical status in the Gaza Strip after escaping captivity and surviving seven assassination attempts, including one in 2002 in which he lost an eye.
"The Israel Defense Forces reports that on July 13, 2024, IDF fighter jets carried out a strike in the Khan Younis area, and after an intelligence assessment, it can be confirmed that Mohammed Deif was killed in the strike," the military said in a statement released on Thursday.
Then, as a result of the strike on the designated humanitarian area, 300 people were injured and 90 people died (according to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health of Gaza). At the same time, Rafa Salam, the commander of Hamas in Khan Younis, was killed.
It was previously reported that Deif was the main target of that strike, but Israel has not yet confirmed that he was actually killed. Hamas claimed to have survived.
Background. As reported, Hamas confirmed that Israel eliminated its political leader in a strike on Tehran. According to media reports, Hania was killed "literally in bed" as a result of a rocket hitting his residence.
