Western European experts accuse Germany of "short-sighted selfishness" towards Russia

What happened. About a hundred experts from Eastern Europe accused Germany of "short-sighted selfishness" towards Russia. The experts believe that the attempt to restrain Russia through diplomacy and negotiations failed – and demand to toughen up the sanctions.

Source. Tagesspiegel newspaper reports that with reference to a letter of 96 Eastern European international security experts to the federal government.

Details. «The open illegal, offensive war of Russia against the peaceful country has decisively confirmed the failure of the policy concerning Moscow conducted by Germany and the EU over decades," the letter goes.
The experts note that the policy rested on the "hope to restrain Moscow's increasingly obvious neo-imperialistic ambitions through a combination of intensive diplomacy, participation in agreements, and numerous business relations." However, Russia's lasting military presence in Moldova since 1992, poorly disguised expansion of the territories using Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014, and other violations all over the globe have made it clear: such an approach will not produce the necessary result.

Nevertheless, all of the above didn't prevent Germany from signing an agreement on the construction of the underwater section of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in 2015 – a year after Russia's open occupation of the Crimea and the beginning of "pseudo-civil war" in the East of Ukraine.
"Insisting on continuing import of the Russian oil and gas on a large scale, the federal government allows Russia to profit significantly from the energy export. That prolongs the war and undermines the effect of the Western sanctions that have already been imposed and are impressive per se. Also, Berlin's conduct constantly contradicts the "historic responsibility" before the states of the former USSR, which Germany publicly undertook after devastating Belarus and Ukraine during World War II," the letter's authors emphasized.

The experts believe that "the tragic and vague destiny of Ukraine alone should be a reason enough for more intensive actions from Germany and the EU. However, precluding Putin from succeeding in his imperial revanchism is a primordial interest of entire Europe." "Trade and general well-being are only possible in a stable, peaceful environment. Putin's success in Ukraine may lead to further aggression towards neighboring non-member states like Moldova and Georgia and increase destabilization of the European community," the letter proceeded.

The authors note that Germany and the European policy on the East should already today concentrate on actively aiding Ukraine's survival – instead of taking measures that may work only many weeks, if not months, later.
"We need to put an end to Germany's short-sighted selfishness in whole-European efforts to resist Putin's aggression and immediately engage every available measure to increase the cost of this war for Russia," the undersigned emphasize.

They namely mean the following:
-sanctions against every Russian bank and complete ban of the SWIFT payment system in Russia;
-cease of purchase of any oil, natural gas, or other raw materials from Russia;
-isolation of Russia and prohibition to enter the EU to all government members and elites close to the authorities;
-confiscation of financial resources and property of the Russian state companies and oligarchs close to Putin;
-exclusion of Russia from all international public and sports events.

Moreover, the experts emphasize the necessity to support the economy, government, and defense of Ukraine. That means also supply to Ukraine of not just light but also heavy defense and offense weapons like large anti-aircraft complexes, planes, ships, and means of transport.
