What happened? More than 2,500 Ukrainian Azovstal fighters are in russian captivity. Their release is being handled by Defence Intelligence.

Details. According to him, it is unprofitable for the russians to torture the Ukrainian military from Azovstal, because they are “public prisoners”. 

Also, Zelensky emphasized that he does not accept the statements of the russian authorities and Donetsk Peopleʼs Republic leaders about the future of Ukrainian defenders. Because in such a way they are trying to promote themselves.

Background. On March 1, the russians surrounded and blocked Mariupol. Since the end of April, Ukrainian fighters have been defending themselves on the last bridgehead, the Azovstal plant. On May 16, it was decided to leave the facility, and the military was taken prisoner. According to British intelligence, about 1,700 Ukrainian servicemen left Azovstal.
