The strategy, which is intended to guide future policy, calls for stricter regulation of existing cybersecurity practices in various industries and improved cooperation between the government and the private sector.
U.S. officials refer to a series of high-profile hacking incidents carried out by Russian hackers against the United States against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine. Speaking to reporters, a U.S. official, who declined to be named, said that part of the new strategy is aimed at curbing Russian hackers.
The official noted that Russia "serves as a haven for cybercriminals." He also called ransomware the main problem the United States is dealing with today. Ransomware attacks, in which cybercriminal groups seize control of systems and demand a ransom, are among the most common types of cyberattacks and have affected a wide range of industries in recent years.
The strategy calls for building coalitions with foreign partners "to put pressure on attackers to change their behavior," said another U.S. official, who also requested anonymity.
"I think we've had some success over the last year in supporting these coalitions," the official added.
Among other things, the strategy calls for improving standards for patching vulnerabilities in computer systems and requiring cloud companies to verify the identity of foreign customers.
Background. As a reminder, Poland reported a Russian attack on a government website.
