After the call, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that Minister Qin Gang warned that the conflict in Ukraine could "get out of control."
The Chinese foreign minister also said that China continues to hope for a dialogue between Ukraine and Russia, "no matter how difficult it is."
He added that he hoped that both sides would not close the door to a political solution.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that he had discussed with his Chinese counterpart the importance of the territorial integrity of his country.
"During my conversation today with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang, we discussed the importance of the principle of territorial integrity. I emphasized the importance of President Zelenskyy's 'Peace Formula' for ending the aggression and restoring a just peace in Ukraine," Kuleba tweeted.
In recent weeks, China has positioned itself as something of a peace mediator, presenting its own peace plan to Ukraine and Russia.
However, the country remains a close ally of Russia and has refused to condemn the war in Ukraine.
Background. The United States reportedly urges Chinese President Xi Jinping to speak directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the White House said earlier amid reports that the Chinese leader will hold a phone conversation with Zelenskyy.
