Ukraine needs $1.5 bln for priority demining of agricultural land – EBA
Interagency working group on demining prioritises 470,000 hectares of potentially contaminated land
According to the World Bank, priority demining of agricultural land alone will cost about $1.5 billion.
This was reported by the European Business Association (EBA).
Today, according to government authorities, about 30% of Ukraine's territory, namely 174,000 square kilometres, is potentially dangerous due to mines. At the same time, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has counted 349 allegedly contaminated areas, half of which are agricultural land.
At the same time, about 10% of the 174,000 square kilometres may actually be contaminated, but identifying directly dangerous areas is a lengthy and costly process.
Currently, the interagency working group on demining, coordinated by the Ministry of Economy, has identified 470,000 hectares of potentially contaminated agricultural land as a priority.
It is noted that inspection measures will be carried out first on land where vegetable crops are grown, secondly on arable land and grain crops, and thirdly on all other agricultural land. Information is collected through regional military administrations, which have their own data and also collect information from farmers.
