Leaked Pentagon documents reveal the depth of US intelligence penetration into the Russian Defense Ministry and the Wagner Group
This offers a rare opportunity to see the depth of US intelligence on allies and enemies

Secret Pentagon documents leaked online in recent weeks have revealed that the United States spies on both allies and enemies, deeply angered U.S. officials who fear the revelations could jeopardize sensitive intelligence sources and compromise relations with important allies.
Some of the documents, believed to be authentic by U.S. officials, reveal the extent of U.S. wiretapping of key allies, including South Korea, Israel, and Ukraine.
Others reveal the extent of U.S. penetration of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Wagner PMC through intercepted communications and human sources that may now be cut off or endangered.
Other documents reveal key shortcomings in Ukraine's weapons, air defense, and battalion size and readiness at a critical point in the war – just before the Ukrainian army counteroffensive – and just as the United States and Ukraine were beginning to develop a more mutually trusting intelligence-sharing relationship.
Ukraine has already changed some of its military plans because of the leak, a source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN.
Also, one of the documents shows that the US has been spying on Zelensky. This is not surprising, says the source close to the president, but Ukrainian officials are deeply disappointed by the leak.
The U.S. intelligence report also says that Zelenskyy in late February "proposed to strike at the positions of the Russian forces in the Rostov region of Russia" with the help of unmanned aerial vehicles, as Ukraine does not have long-range weapons capable of reaching that far.
This may explain the US public comments that it does not want to provide Ukraine with long-range missile systems because of fears that Kyiv will use them to strike Russia. Although Ukraine has promised not to use U.S.-supplied weapons for this purpose.
According to officials, the leak also forced the Pentagon to take steps to limit the flow of confidential documents that were previously available to hundreds of people in the government.
Background. One of the documents also states that South Korea initially did not want to provide Ukraine with ammunition, but under pressure from the United States found a way to circumvent its own neutrality policy.
