Ukraine and 5 Nordic countries signed a joint document supporting Ukraine's accession to NATO

The Nordic NATO member states will continue to support Ukraine on its path to the Alliance.

Source. This is stated in the Joint Statement of the Presidents of Finland and Ukraine, the Prime Ministers of Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, signed at the Nordic Summit in Helsinki, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

"At the Bucharest Summit in 2008, the allies agreed that Ukraine would become a NATO member. NATO's open door policy is firmly enshrined in the Washington Treaty. Ukraine has officially requested an accelerated accession procedure in September 2022. The Nordic NATO member states will continue to support Ukraine on its path to future membership," the document says.

It is noted that even before joining NATO, Ukraine's security is of great importance to the Alliance, and in this regard, Ukraine and the Nordic NATO countries are looking forward to the decisions at the NATO Summit in Vilnius in July 2023.

The Nordic countries will continue to provide strong support in strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities, as well as political, financial, and humanitarian support as long as it is needed, both individually and in the formats of international cooperation in the EU, NATO, and the UN.

The Summit participants confirmed that russia must immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

The Nordic countries support Ukraine's initiative to establish a just and sustainable peace based on the Peace Formula and are ready to cooperate with Ukraine to ensure the widest possible international participation in the implementation of the peace plan.

The document also emphasizes that the Summit participants are firmly committed to bringing to justice those responsible for war crimes in connection with russia's aggressive war against Ukraine. In this regard, the Nordic countries support the establishment of a Special Tribunal.

In addition, the participants intend to continue working together with other countries to develop mechanisms to ensure compensation for losses, injuries and damages caused by russian aggression. In particular, an international register of damage caused to Ukraine by russia will be presented at the Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik on May 16-17, 2023.

According to the document, the participants agree on the need to increase collective pressure on russia through further sanctions to weaken its ability to continue its aggressive war.

In addition, the Nordic countries, together with international organizations and partners, intend to participate in the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine after the war, as well as to strongly support Ukraine in its efforts to implement reforms and in fulfilling the requirements necessary for the early start of negotiations on EU accession.

Background. To recap, the Polish Foreign Ministry accused Germany of delaying Ukraine's accession to NATO.
