Law enforcement agencies have penetrated a global network of computers infected with a malicious virus that was used by the russian FSB to monitor computers in at least 50 countries, including NATO governments.
This software has been used for two decades to steal documents from NATO governments, journalists and others.
"The U.S. Department of Justice, along with our international partners, dismantled a global network of malware-infected computers that the russian government used for nearly two decades to conduct cyber espionage, including against our NATO allies," said Attorney General Merrick Garland.
The spyware, called Snake, was operated by the Turla hacker group. According to U.S. counterintelligence, the group consists of employees of the Ryazan branch of the FSB. To cover their tracks, the stolen documents were transferred through infected computers located in the United States.
FSB agents have found computers with the Snake virus in Oregon, South Carolina and Connecticut, among others.
On Monday, the spyware was deactivated as a result of a highly technical operation by U.S. law enforcement agencies that turned the spyware against itself, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said.
Background. Meanwhile, an unknown hacker reportedly stole $300,000 worth of bitcoin from the russian FSB and transferred it to Ukraine.
