Florida Governor Ron DeSantis plans to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election in an interview with Elon Musk on the Twitter Spaces platform. DeSantis is considered Trump's main rival.

The NYT writes that DeSantis' decision adds "an element of surprise" to the election race and gives the politician "access to a large online audience."
"This is one of the most unexpected campaign launches in modern history," said a spokeswoman for Make America Great Again, a Trump-supporting organization.
The interview, according to media reports, will take place on Wednesday at 18:00 (1:00 am Kyiv time). According to CNN, the conversation will be moderated by Musk's former Paypal colleague David Sachs, who is a supporter of DeSantis and a sponsor of his political campaign.
Twitter Spaces, as Reuters explains, is a new platform where users (with at least 600 followers) can conduct live broadcasts. Up to 13 people can speak at the same time on the online platform. Anyone can join to listen to the broadcast. Previously, Musk used Spaces to talk about Twitter's performance and his plans for Tesla.
The 44-year-old is considered Donald Trump's main rival among Republicans. Trump himself has recognized this.
However, according to the FT, citing a RealClearPolitics poll, Trump is far ahead of DeSantis, for whom no more than 20% of voters are ready to vote. However, he remains the main rival of the ex-president, as the other candidates, according to the polls, receive only a few percent of the vote.
The nomination of Desantis via Twitter could expose the company to a new wave of criticism and provoke a conflict with one of its largest advertisers, Walt Disney, Bloomberg writes. Desantis had previously accused Disney of imposing woke ideology (LGBT, feminism, and left-wing politics in general) on children. The company responded by suing the politician.
Musk told the WSJ that he would not publicly support DeSantis, nor any other politician. But in fact, he has already done so many times. For example, last July, he tweeted that the Florida governor would "easily win" if he ran against Biden in 2024. And in November, he answered a Twitter user's question in the affirmative about whether he would support DeSantis in the election.
