Germany has adopted a new security strategy based on the Russian threat
The Russian invasion of Ukraine forced the authors of the document to significantly change the original concept
On Wednesday, the German government approved Germany's first National Security Strategy, which is based on an analysis of the situation in the world and on the European continent, according to an official statement from Berlin.
"The main task of our security policy is to ensure that we can continue to live in peace and freedom in our country. To this end, we are unwaveringly committed to NATO and the EU and are strengthening the Bundeswehr to fulfill its core mission of defending the country and the alliance," the statement said.
At present, the main threat to Germany's national security comes from Russia, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a press conference following the adoption of the document. According to him, the Russian threat will continue in the near future.
Berlin's new strategy envisages strengthening the fight against espionage and sabotage, contributing to the strengthening of the pan-European technological base for security and defense, and building Germany's potential in the space industry.
The document also states that Germany will increase annual defense spending to 2% of GDP.
Work on the new national security strategy was initiated in the fall of 2021. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 forced the authors of the document to significantly change the original concept, German media reported.
