"This strategic agreement is part of a comprehensive government initiative designed to increase national energy independence," Hungarian government spokesman Zoltán Kovács wrote on his X (Twitter).
"The purpose of this step is to increase energy security and stabilise gas prices in the context of the international energy crisis caused by conflicts and sanctions," he added.
According to Kovács, the purchase agreement was reached during Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Hungary on Sunday. The finalisation of the details is expected by the end of the year.
In a statement, BOTAS called the deal revolutionary, as it is the first time Turkey has agreed to export gas to a country that is not its immediate neighbour. Representatives of the Turkish side emphasised that the agreement would increase the security of energy supplies to Europe.
Background. As a reminder, traders from the EU and Moldova supplied almost 600 million cubic meters of gas to Ukraine ahead of the new heating season.
