The United States and its G7 allies believe that the war in Ukraine could last for 6-7 years and take this scenario into account when planning their budgets, Bloomberg reports.

A senior official from a European G7 country said that this was much longer than many officials had anticipated earlier this year, but that slow progress in Ukraine's counteroffensive had changed expectations.

According to him, the allies now need to plan for financial support to continue to support Kyiv throughout such a long conflict.

The G7 leaders, including US President Joe Biden, voiced their forecast at the UN General Assembly, which began in New York on September 16. Representatives of the G7 countries discussed the issue on the sidelines on Monday and agreed that the war is likely to continue in the medium to long term, according to a US State Department spokesman.

At the same time, Biden publicly confirmed that the United States, its allies and partners "will continue to support the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their sovereignty, territorial integrity and freedom."

The day before, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said that it would take "a very long time" for Ukraine to achieve a complete victory. According to him, it will not be possible to liberate the occupied territories during the current counteroffensive, as there are "more than 200,000 Russian soldiers in this part of the country."

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also advised to prepare for a prolonged conflict. He noted that everyone would like a quick peace, but if Ukraine stops fighting right now, its existence "will come to an end."

A long war is also predicted in Germany. Major General of the Bundeswehr, head of the Situation Center for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense, Christian Freuding, said that the end of hostilities should be expected no earlier than 2032.
