Australia supports Zelenskyy's proposals to limit Russia's veto in the UN Security Council

The Australian government supports the demand of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to strip Russia of its veto power in the UN Security Council.

This was stated by Foreign Minister Penny Wong, calling for further reforms in the organization.

"We must demand more from the permanent members, including restrictions on the use of the veto. Russia is making a mockery of the UN every day by continuing its illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine," Penny Wong said in her speech to the UN General Assembly.

On Wednesday, September 20, Volodymyr Zelenskyy told members of the UN Security Council that Moscow's veto power prevents the UN Security Council from responding adequately to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Security Council consists of 15 members, of which five have veto power: China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"We need to ensure greater representation from both permanent and non-permanent members from Africa, Latin America and Asia, including permanent seats for India and Japan," Wong said.

She also said that Australia is seeking a seat on the UN Security Council for the period from 2029 to 2030.

According to Wong, the UN does not have enough specific mechanisms to prevent military conflicts.

She also called for attention to be paid to tensions in the South China Sea and North Korea's nuclear weapons development.

Background. As reported, Zelenskyy proposed to reform the UN, noting that Russia's veto power has brought the organization to a standstill. He proposed three steps to reform the UN: in particular, overcoming the Russian veto, expanding the list of member states, and a rapid protocol for action in case of aggression.
